According to Wikipedia, aromatherapy is defined as a process that “uses plant materials and aromatic plant oils, including essential oils, and other aromatic compounds for the purpose of altering one’s mood, cognitive, psychological or physical well being.” While that definition is a little dry, it accurately captures the benefits gained through aromatherapy.
An essential oil is the pure essence of a plant; when used properly, it can have physical and psychological benefits including relieving stress, helping to prevent insomnia, and increasing energy to reduce fatigue. Essentially, the inhaled aroma of the essential oils can help to stimulate brain function, while the absorption of the oils through the skin can assist in whole body wellness. Oils can also help to greatly increase oxygen in the body, increase the effectiveness of massage therapy, help to detoxify the body, and help cells assimilate nutrients more efficiently.
